Swiss Talent Forum 2009

Encouraging sustainable development

The first ever Swiss Talent Forum grouped together 126 of Europe’s brightest thinkers, who met in Thun between January 25 and 29 to discuss the energy challenges of the future.

The politically independent think-tank has been designed for young adults who have a sense of obligation about the global and long-term challenges of our time. The Talents participating in the 2009 meeting were asked to develop new approaches to tackling the problem of dwindling non-renewable energy supplies and encouraging sustainable global development.

The students - 105 of them from Switzerland and 21 from other European countries – were to learn the values and skills of networking, negotiation and decision-making over the five days.

They were introduced to high-calibre personalities from the world of business, science, society and politics. The keynote speeches of these leaders were meant to stimulate debate within the various workshops.

At the daily evening marketplaces, the Talents were given the opportunity to comment on each other’s summaries and exchange ideas, with the aim of finding solutions to complex problems. The young participants were coached by media experts to present their summaries at a news conference at the end of the Forum.

The event was organized by Swiss Youth in Science, a foundation promoting young research scientists, with sponsorship from two multinational companies, Siemens and Roche, and the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property.
